We train hard to get fitter, stronger and ultimately we are learning to defend ourselves if the need arises. And I think this is true in pretty much all cases and for people I know who have been training for a long time and can fight and could defend themselves, is that they actually do not want to fight and are not interested unless it’s absolutely essential, and that’s exactly what we learn to do and teach in our classes.
Wouldn’t you rather your child or even yourself were was able to defend yourself if you needed to do so? I certainly would and I know lots of others do as well.
At IMA Marlborough and Tidworth we do everything we can to equip the children with all the skills they need to navigate this topic and never promote fighting, violence or aggression, unless it’s a last resort.
I’ve had parents saying “I don’t want my kids fighting” and I tell them all the same, they are not learning to fight, they are learning control, discipline, respect, awareness, de-escalation, the law and self defence, and ultimately how to defend themselves as a last resort, and that is a big difference.
I like to think of martial arts in the same way as teaching my children to read, write or to swim, and to be able to defend themselves is equally as important.
