Sparring in Martial Arts: Let’s bust some myths!

Sparring in martial arts: Let’s bust some myths!

Firstly, we do teach full contact kickboxing and sparring is completely optional at IMA Marlborough and Tidworth, and if you or your child does not want to do it, then you do not do it, it’s as simple as that.

But if you do, One of the best ways our students at IMA can gain confidence, discipline, and valuable life skills is by sparring. Sparring is often misunderstood, causing hesitation for many parents. Let’s look at some common myths and questions surrounding sparring—time to clear things up!

Myth 1: “Sparring is dangerous and encourages aggression.” ❌

Truth: At IMA, sparring is carefully supervised and an instructor-led activity designed to build controlled skill, focus, and discipline—not aggression. Our instructors always prioritise safety and structure in classes. Students quickly learn self-control, patience, respect, and awareness through structured drills, just as shown in this photo from our Cadets session.

Myth 2: “My child will be intimidated or scared.” ❌

Truth: Absolutely not! Sparring at IMA is carefully adapted for each child’s comfort, skill level, and confidence. We focus on positive, encouraging coaching techniques that empower your child. It’s common to see even shy, reserved children grow more confident and excited each week as their skills increase and fears disappear.

Myth 3: “Martial arts training is only suitable for naturally athletic children.” ❌

Truth: Martial arts training at IMA is fully inclusive and adaptable to every child’s strengths and abilities, athletic or not. Our instructors encourage progress at each student’s personal pace, building their individual strength, coordination and confidence. Martial arts benefit everyone, regardless of their starting physical abilities or fitness levels!

To sum it up—sparring is friendly, controlled, and beneficial for your children’s personal growth, confidence, and wellbeing. Don’t let any myths hold you back from what could become your child’s favourite activity and number-one confidence-booster.
