Who or what is good?
I recently had a discussion with a prospective new student who wanted to come along and train with us, and they had lots of good questions as most people joining us do.
One of the questions was “So are you good? Well you must be as you have a black belt”.
And my reply was this.
“Good” is all about perception and how we individually see things, or what we believe is “Good” compared to previous experiences or what we expect from something.
At some point in time my instructor(s) must have thought I was more than good enough to pass each and every one of my belts in each style of martial arts I’ve studied.
But now I am an instructor and spend more time teaching than training, it’s down to each and every one of the students who come along to our sessions to train with us to make that decision for themselves, based on what they want or expect from our classes.
So I told them that I would leave that decision up to them and to make their own mind up themselves.
Being a black belt doesn’t make you good, having 10 black belts in different styles doesn’t make you good, advertising yourself as a “world champion” doesn’t make you good, and anyone who actually has to tell someone else they are “good” or other words I’ve heard people use to describe themselves, probably means they are actually not so good.
Sure, I may be better at some things than other people, I may be able to kick and punch technically better than some, or even kick higher and harder than others, but there are also lots of other instructors in our club and outside of our club that are a lot better than me at many things, and I know that as a fact.
So, what is “Good” is all about perception and how you see something yourself, and you make that decision yourself.
We have a great club with loads of people who are all trying to better themselves and be just that little bit better than they were in the last session, and that includes me.
If you want to come along, completely free, to any of our kickboxing and martial arts classes in Marlborough or Tidworth and give it a try yourself, then come and see what we have to offer you, you might be surprised.
Wayne.
