What Should You Look for in a Martial Arts Club? | Impact Martial Arts Marlborough

Choosing a martial arts club is about much more than finding a convenient class time.

Whether you’re looking for children’s martial arts classes in Marlborough, a kickboxing class for yourself, or somewhere the whole family can train, it’s worth taking a little time to find out who is teaching you, what qualifications they hold and what standards the club follows.

At Impact Martial Arts in Marlborough, Wiltshire, we believe students and parents should be able to make an informed decision about where they train.

That’s why we’re happy to demonstrate the qualifications, training, safeguarding procedures, insurance and standards behind our classes.

What Should You Look for When Choosing a Martial Arts Club?

Martial arts can be a fantastic way to improve fitness, confidence, discipline, coordination and self-defence skills.

But not every club is necessarily the same.

The Cobra Martial Arts Association (CMAA) recommends that people considering joining a martial arts club ask about important areas such as instructor grades, instructor training, insurance, DBS checks and pricing.

Importantly, the CMAA points out that being a Black Belt does not automatically make someone a qualified instructor.

A good martial arts club should be able to demonstrate both martial arts experience and appropriate instructor training.

At Impact Martial Arts, these are standards we take seriously.

1. Does the Instructor Hold a Genuine Martial Arts Grade?

One of the first things you should establish is the instructor’s own martial arts experience and grade.

A Black Belt or Dan grade represents years of training, development and commitment. It also gives students an opportunity to establish the instructor’s experience within their chosen martial art.

Impact Martial Arts was founded in 1999, and our Chief Instructor, Wayne Timlin, is a CMAA-recognised 7th Dan Black Belt in Kickboxing.

Our website provides information about Wayne’s martial arts background, qualifications and progression through the grades, allowing students to see more than simply a belt on a wall.

We believe that experience matters.

But experience alone isn’t the whole story.

2. Is the Instructor Actually Trained to Teach?

This is an important question that is sometimes overlooked.

Being highly skilled at martial arts doesn’t automatically mean someone has been trained to teach martial arts safely and effectively.

The CMAA recommends that instructors should have appropriate training covering areas such as:

  • Teaching principles
  • Safeguarding
  • First Aid
  • Health & Safety
  • Risk assessment
  • Working with children and vulnerable people

At Impact Martial Arts, instructor development is an important part of how we operate.

Wayne Timlin holds Martial Arts Instructor UK (MAIUK) instructor training, alongside First Aid and other relevant training and qualifications.

Our instructors continue to develop their knowledge rather than assuming that earning a Black Belt is the end of their education.

3. Is the Club Properly Insured?

Martial arts involve physical activity and, like any sport, appropriate insurance is important.

A reputable club should be able to explain what insurance it has and what that insurance covers.

Impact Martial Arts maintains appropriate public liability insurance and provides information about our cover rather than simply asking prospective members to take our word for it, a copy of the policy is found on our website.

We also provide information about our insurance arrangements on our website so that students and parents can understand the protection in place.

4. Are Instructors DBS Checked?

If you’re looking for children’s martial arts classes in Marlborough, safeguarding should be one of the questions you ask before joining.

Parents should feel comfortable knowing who is teaching their children and what safeguarding procedures are in place.

Impact Martial Arts has DBS checks and safeguarding procedures in place for instructors working with children.

We also follow the safeguarding standards and policies associated with our governing/supporting martial arts organisation.

For us, safeguarding isn’t an optional extra. It is part of running a responsible children’s martial arts programme.

5. Does the Club Have Clear Pricing?

Nobody likes discovering unexpected costs after they’ve joined a club.

Before signing up, it’s sensible to ask about:

  • Class fees
  • Membership
  • Licensing
  • Grading fees
  • Equipment
  • Any other charges

At Impact Martial Arts, we publish our pricing information so prospective members can see what our classes and membership options involve.

We believe martial arts clubs should be straightforward about their costs.

6. Does the Club Take Safety Seriously?

Martial arts should be challenging, but they should also be taught responsibly.

A good instructor should understand how to manage physical contact, exercises, equipment and the training environment.

At Impact Martial Arts, we use risk assessments and safety procedures as part of our normal club management.

We also place importance on teaching students appropriate techniques and helping them progress at a level suitable for their experience.

For children’s classes especially, creating an environment that is structured, supportive and well supervised is extremely important.

7. Does the Club Have a Structured Training Programme?

Another useful question is how students actually progress.

Are beginners simply thrown into an advanced class, or is there a structured pathway?

At Impact Martial Arts, students work through a progressive martial arts training programme designed to develop skills over time.

This includes technique, fitness, pad work, combinations, movement, discipline and, where appropriate, controlled sparring and self-defence training.

The aim isn’t simply to collect belts.

The aim is to become a better martial artist.

8. How Long Has the Club Been Established?

Experience isn’t everything, but longevity can tell you something about a club.

Impact Martial Arts was founded in 1999 and has been providing martial arts training for more than two decades.

That means generations of students have trained with the club over the years.

Today, we continue to provide martial arts and kickboxing classes in Marlborough, Wiltshire, for children, teenagers and adults.

What About Impact Martial Arts?

We don’t expect people to choose a martial arts club simply because we say we’re good.

We believe you should be able to look at the evidence and make your own decision.

At Impact Martial Arts, that evidence includes:

  • CMAA-recognised 7th Dan Kickboxing grade
  • Qualified and trained martial arts instructors
  • First Aid training
  • DBS checks
  • Safeguarding procedures
  • Risk assessments
  • Appropriate insurance
  • Clear pricing
  • Structured martial arts training
  • More than 25 years of club history
  • Training available for children and adults

These are the standards we believe a responsible martial arts club should demonstrate.
