How you can progress
At Impact Martial Arts UK, we follow a progressive grading system (PGS) as outlined by our governing body, Cobra Martial Arts Association (CMAA). This page will guide you through how our belt system works, what each stage represents, and what’s required to progress to the next level.

Our Progressive Grading System (PGS)
At our club, we follow a Progressive Grading System (PGS) that allows you to advance through the belt ranks at your own pace. Rather than sitting formal grading exams on specific dates, you’ll work through a clear set of techniques for each belt level, getting them ticked off as you master them.
You’ll be given a grading sheet that outlines all the required techniques for your next belt, so you always know exactly what you’re working towards.
Earning your belt
We don’t (and never will) award belts simply for attendance. Belts must be earned by demonstrating competence in the required techniques and showing clear progress from one belt to the next. Every belt represents real improvement and skill, not just time served.
How you’ll learn
Each week, you’ll be guided by a qualified and experienced instructor, all of whom hold a minimum of a nationally recognised 1st degree black belt in the discipline they are teaching. Our instructors have years of training behind them and will break down every technique in detail, helping you build confidence and ability step by step.
– Our 4th degree black belts have been training with us for over 20 years.
– Our 6th degree black belt and chief instructor has over 30 years of training and 26+ years of teaching experience.
Progression & Timeframes
As you develop, the grading process naturally becomes more intuitive as you’ll have a wider skillset and stronger foundation. That said, every belt must still be earned, and you’ll feel genuinely proud when you achieve each new level.
On average, students who train regularly reach black belt level within around 4 years, though this varies depending on individual progress, training frequency, and commitment.
Recognition & Certificates
Upon achieving each belt, you’ll receive:
– Your new coloured belt
– A nationally recognised certificate, which is generally transferrable to other clubs should you ever move on
A small grading fee applies. Details of this will be included in your welcome pack.
Please note: Gradings are entirely optional. You are welcome to train simply for enjoyment or fitness, without working towards belts if that suits you better.
A final word on belts
If you’re looking for a club where black belts are handed out easily or earned just by showing up, we are certainly not the right fit for you. But if you’re ready to work hard, improve consistently, and take pride in your achievements, we will support you every step of the way.
